Celebration of Urban League's 30th Annual Gala & Silent Auction
Each year the Urban League of Greater Southwestern Ohio (ULGSO) gets a stellar entertainment lineup for its annual An Evening to Soar Gala & Silent Auction. This year’s soirée took place Sept. 22 at the Duke Energy Convention Center and featured the Zapp Band and a special performance by R&B singer Howard Hewett.
Emcees WROU radio host Faith Daniels and WLWT news anchor Courtis Fuller guided the party agenda, starting with remarks by ULGSO Chairwoman Alandes Powell and opening prayer by Pastor Paul Booth, Junior of Legacy Pointe Church. A live auction offered a vacation villa for one week in France, Broadway tickets for Hamilton in Chicago, tickets to the ESPY Awards in Los Angeles, sports memorabilia, and fine art.
Hewett serenaded the Journey Award honorees by singing his song aptly titled “The Journey.” Honorees were recognized from The Kroger Co., Premier Mail & Fulfillment and Lithko Restoration Technologies as well as from the League’s job training programs and volunteer auxiliary groups.
The Journey Award Honorees are Life Ready program graduate Anthony Campbell, President of Premier Mail & Fulfillment Peter McConney, Urban Leader Institute graduate Rodney Hardin of The Kroger Co., Urban Leader Guild Liaison Aurelia “Candie” Simmons, Young Professionals President Mario Cannon of Lithko Restoration Technologies and Miami Valley Urban League SOAR (Solid Opportunities for Advancement & Retention) program graduate Robert Talbert. Urban League Acting President & CEO Chara Fisher Jackson congratulated all of the honorees and presented them with their award.
The Journey Award honorees shared their success stories with gala guests. Watch and be inspired by their motivation to overcome obstacles and succeed.
