Each year, the Urban League of Greater Southwestern Ohio’s Annual Luncheon brings together the community to increase awareness of poverty issues and to raise crucial funding for the Urban League’s job training, youth development, advocacy and entrepreneurship programs.
Held February 10 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, the 68th Annual Luncheon and Glorifying the Lions Ceremony exceeded both its attendance and fundraising goals. More than 600 guests from the business and nonprofit community, elected officials, and community volunteers participated and approximately $250,000 was raised in support of Urban League programs.
Four community leaders were inducted into the Legendary Lions Society this year. We herald these awardees for their energy, creativity and passion to make the world a better place, and wish to specially thank for their gifts to the community and the Urban League. This year’s honorees are Alphonse A. Gerhardstein, John W. Harshaw, Gwendolyn Ivory Robinson and Rhine McLin.
The 2017 Fifth Third Bank People of Courage & Joan R. Herschede Scholarship was awarded to UC student Mariah Thompson who is studying Secondary Education with a focus on English in the College of Education, Criminal Justice and Human Services.
The luncheon featured ULGSO President & CEO Donna Jones Baker who spoke about the challenges the League and the community face in helping families break the cycle of poverty. You can read Ms. Baker’s full speech HERE and read through the program book HERE.
The Office of Development thanks the many guests and volunteers who helped to ensure the 2017 luncheon’s success. We wish to give a special thanks to our Corporate Medallion sponsors who made donations of $75,000 or more to support our programming. This year’s Corporate Medallion sponsors are Cintas and KeyBank.
